Saint Mary ’ s denies students access to Napster service

The Sain t M ary ’s faculty assembly called a special meet­ ing for this Wednesday to dis­ cuss the proposed changes in the College’s mission statement. “Are you ever going to have 100 p e rc e n t of the people happy? Of course not, ” said Jell' B reese, c h a ir of the faculty assembly. “I would like, howev­ er, that everyone feels that they have been heard. ” The meeting arose because of concerns exp ressed by som e members of the faculty during last W ednesday’s meeting. At the meeting, the faculty was pre­ sented with a proposed draft of the College’s new mission state­ ment. Several faculty members expressed their concerns about the draft and about the process by which the draft was written, according to Breese. “It seems we have a lucid and clear mission s ta tem ent now,” said Patty Sayre, professor of philosophy and a member of the faculty assembly. “To change som eth ing lucid and c lear to som eth ing not Although many of the faculty a ttended the meetings, Sayre said it was not clear tha t the meetings were called in order to write a new lucid and u n c le a r is a mistake.” A committee of one student, two faculty m e m b e rs and se v e ra l m e m ­ be rs of the administration w orked on a new m ission s t a t e m e n t for several years. One of the main concerns of the faculty assembly was that they felt excluded from the p ro cess th a t p ro d u ced Wednesday’s draft. “There were people that spoke a t [theI faculty a s s e m b ly ,” Breese said. “They were con­ cerned about the process.” Open sessions were held last Spring to discuss the College’s m ission and core values . “To change something lucid and clear to something not lucid and unclear is a mistake. ”
